Exploring cosmetic dentistry: routes to whiter teeth

A host of procedures fall under the umbrella term “cosmetic dentistry” and at Dove Dental Care in Derby, we are pleased to offer a wide array of treatments both large and small, all designed to create the smile you’ve always wanted. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all treatment in cosmetic dentistry, so you can rest assured that when you come into our Derby practice for a consultation, all treatments will be individually tailored to suit your needs.

cosmetic-dentistry-derbyOne of the most common requests in cosmetic dentistry is to have brighter, whiter teeth. We all know how attractive a dazzling bright, white smile is, but similarly most of us know that keeping your smile bright and beautiful requires work.

Everyday activities easily stain the teeth. Drinks including coffee, tea, and red wine are common culprits for surface tooth staining, as are habits such as cigarette or cigar smoking. Some medical conditions stain the teeth, whilst some medicines and medicated mouth washes also have the unfortunate side effect of leaving stains on the teeth.

At Dove Dental Care in Derby we have a number of ways to treat stained teeth. The perfect treatment for you will depend on a number of factors, including the type of staining involved. When you come into our clinic for a cosmetic dentistry consultation, your dentist will assess this, and will discuss the most appropriate treatment options with you.

Teeth whitening

Perhaps the best known procedure in cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening should only be carried out by a dentist. It involves the use of special dental bleaching gel to remove common stains from the teeth, and can even work on deep-seated staining.

Porcelain veneers

Some types of tooth staining are permanent, in which case teeth whitening won’t work. But cosmetic dentistry has other options to offer. At our Derby clinic we can use porcelain veneers to improve the appearance of a permanently stained tooth or teeth.

Inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays are an alternative to obvious metal fillings. They are made from porcelain, so are very strong. Your dentist will be sure to choose a shade of porcelain that matches your teeth.
