The newspapers highlight a study published today in the Public Health Nutrition Journal suggesting that sugar intake should be limited to four teaspoons a day in order to reduce dental decay and save health costs. Four teaspoons a day would equate to less than half a can of coke, two digestive biscuits or one bowl of cereal. The researchers are calling for the food industry to cut the amount of sugar in its products saying this will improve oral health and reduce health costs.
If you are concerned or unsure if your intake of sugar is high, or you feel that you have a high caries rate please speak to your Dentist at your next routine Dental Examination appointment.

Anti snoring treatment and sleep assessments at Dove Dental Care
Certain factors increase the chance of being a snorer:-
* Physiology- some of us are more likely to snore due to our physiology
* Gender- Men tend to put on more upper body weight therefore have more soft tissue around the neck. This makes men more prone to snoring.
* Weight- If you are overweight you may have more soft tissue around your neck.
* Age- As we age our muscles become weaker and this can lead to weaker throat muscles
* Lifestyle- Some people snore after drinking alcohol or sleeping tablet. This causes additional relaxation of muscles in the neck and throat.
Do you or your partner suffer from breathing difficulties during sleep such as snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea? You might be pleased to know that dentistry may have a solution for you. A series of oral devices or mouthpieces are now available and can be fitted by a dentist that will address your snoring problems by preventing the lower jaw from dropping back during sleep thereby preventing the closure of your airways, which will stop you from snoring.
Such a custom-made mouth piece is made from impressions taken of your teeth to ensure they fit you comfortably. Made from a hard wearing plastic, the mouthpiece is worn at night and works by holding the bottom jaw in a slightly forward position. This position opens up your airway significantly allowing you to breathe better and as a result sleep better too.
Speak to your dentist today about how your snoring problem can be addressed.

If you want to reduce the lines on your face without having to resort to surgical procedures, the good news is that facial rejuvenation techniques can soften wrinkles for a …more youthful appearance.
The benefit of having this treatment done by dentists is that they have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the facial anatomy and can perform this delicate work in a precise manner. Our practice uses the botulinum toxin type A for this treatment, an injectable aesthetic solution.
Once injected into the skin, the botulinum toxin relaxes the tiny facial muscles, which cause expression lines, by blocking the nerve impulses in them, leaving the skin looking smoother.
Areas on the face that can be treated include frown lines (vertical lines which form between the eyebrows), eyebrows, crows’ feet, forehead lines and lines around the mouth and top lip, known as ‘smoker’s lines’.
The botulinum injection is quick and painless; usually lasting around 5-10 minutes and requires no antiseptic. Results will usually be seen in a few days, sometimes taking between 4-7 days for the effects to be seen.
As it’s not a permanent treatment, the effects will wear off over time, so it’s recommended that the procedure is repeated every 3 months for effective results.
